About PhilaniSA
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi

“For every worker who dies each year as a result of an accident on a South African mine, nine more die of tuberculosis. It affects 500 000 mine workers, their 230 000 partners and 700 000 children ”

The Facts

“The mining industry in South Africa losses R9.5 Billion a year because of health costs, losing staff and training new staff as well as loss in productivity"

The Daily Maverick

"For over a century, legislation has been in place aimed at compensating South African miners with an occupational lung disease. But the system, stained by racial inequality for much of its existence, is broken"

Girdler-Brown, mining health expert

“These findings and their consistency with previously published reports on the prevalence of respiratory disease in ex miners provide a compelling case for improved statutory surveillance and reporting of silicosis and TB among former gold miners not just for compensation purposes, but also to monitor the effectiveness of control measures aimed at reducing the risk”

“Over the past 17 years, conventional tort litigation has been increasingly successful in holding multinational corporations (MNCs) accountable for human rights violations in developingcountries”

Richard Meeran

Background

Pilani SA began as a research undertaking with the intention to gain a deeper insight to the problems affecting the mining industry. Our research revealed alarming statistics around the HIV and TB infection rates in mining companies and communities. The research also revealed the severity of Silicosis and diabetes in this industry.

We have identified the mining industry as an important sector particularly with R9.5 Billion lost every year due to:

- A loss in productivity,
- Changing of staff
-  health costs.

HIV, TB, Diabetes and Silicosis are less that can be treated and managed with early detection, intervention and disciplined use of medication.

There are three states of health that most people share in South Africa

- When you are healthy and working
- When you are sick and you know it
- When you are sick and you dont know it.

We aim to help companies identify employees who are unwell, before their health issue becomes severe or affects company productivity
